Sri Lankan Knowledge Economy

Economic System vs Free Education System

Throughout the last five decades the welfare oriented policies have helped Sri Lanka to leapfrog in terms of education and health sectors when compared with other developing countries in the region. Good health facilities and health indicators, very high literacy rate (over 90%) are can be shown as good examples.

But other countries in the region who might not have achieved those but have gone far beyond us in terms of economic performance seems to be doing better than us. Countries like Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand are good examples.

So us to build and knowledge economy we need a fair balance of all the pillars, specially the good economic engine and good wheel set, human resources to take the country forward.

  3. I think we are in route 134 (Mt.lavinia - Angoda)

Even the driver is not sure and the conductor is clueless

  4. Hi Mr.Sameera

At least the driver knows where he wants to go, the conductor will go where ever the driver goes but what about the passengers?

so who gave us directions to get into the wrong bus? was it the left who encouraged welfare policies or the right which encouraged privatization and liberalized economy or the problem is somewhere else? I think the problem is not having leadership which truly cared about the needs of the majority of people. other countries which got into the wrong bus seem to have corrected themselves ...such as India and china. trying to answer these is like the "chicken and egg" problem
so its left for individual passengers to find there own way!

  5. Though your name is not there, I partially agree with you. Yes some extremists were draging the country to two extreme ends, I think middle path is the better.

BUT, the passengers are helpless, they will not be able to find the best route by themselves. But they can influence.

  7. I think yes, this is the high time government should give the part of the burden to the private sector. So they can focus more on the economy and expand it.

So more and more educated youth will be absorbed and we will not see protests of educated youth in Sri Lankan capital Colombo asking for employments.
